Palakkad

Palakkad, also known as Palghat, is a city in the state of Kerala in southern India. It is the administrative headquarters of Palakkad District. Palakkad lies near the Palakkad gap, a pass through the Western Ghats ranges that run parallel to the west coast of India, and connects Kerala to the state of Tamil Nadu to the east.

Palakkad is a railway junction on India's Southern Railway. The cities of Pollachi, Dindigul and Madurai are connected by the meter gauge track starting from here. The trains on the meter gauge are like lifelines for the people of the town, bringing vegetables, fish and dairy products. The office of the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway is situated near Palakkad Junction Railway Station.

Palakkad has also well connected by roads. The National Highway 47 between Salem-Kanyakumari and the Palakkad-Kozhikode state Highway 213 pass through the district. Another important road is the Palakkad to Ponnani which connects NH 47 and NH 17. Walayar check post is located on the national highway to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

Palakkad:79 km from Thrissur and in Palakkad district is famous for Tippu Sultan's Fort walls.'

Kunthipuzha: The tributary of Bharatapuzha originated from Silent Valley where the National park situated.

Malampuzha: 13 km from Palakkad. The Malampuzha dam was constructed in 1956 with garden, children's park, fish model aquarium and the rope way. Fantacy park here is an added attraction.

Meenkara: 32 km south east from Palakkad, Meenkara dam and lake are the special attraction for nature lovers. Fish ponds are here.

Nelliyampathy: The place of Orange estates is at 9 km from Nenmara.

Parambikulam: Wildlife Sanctuary with an area of 285 Sq km. The dam of Aliyar Project is here.

Sholayar: The topmost area at Attappady. 25 km from Anakatty - Natural beauty with cold weather. Coffee and tea estates.

Silent Valley: 46 km north east of Mannarkkad silent valley is the dense green natural forest.

Siruvani: 25 km from west of Coimbatore near the Mannarkkad at Ittakurissi. The dam and the forest are the main attractions.

  • Puthur Sree Thirupuraikkal bhagavathy Temple at Puthur.
  • C.S.I. Church of Hope, Mepparamba the Ancient C.S.I. Church built by Basel Mission missionaries which is situated in Mepparamba and is famous for its architectural marvel.

How to Reach

By Air :The nearest Airport is Coimbatore, 55 km away. To the south is Cochin Airport, 160 km away.

Train:There are two Railway stations here. The main one is the Palakkad Junction situated 5 km from the City and other is in the Town.

By Road:Palakkad is well connected by good motorable roads with the major cities of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
